Classroom Challenges

A lot of activity goes on in a typical ABE classroom. Students are at different skill levels. ABE teachers are adept at adjusting their approach and expectations dependent upon the topic, the student, the language, etc. A student living with brain injury may present the following challenges:

  • Variable attention and concentration
  • Anxiety
  • Need for repetition; a slower pace
  • Expressions of frustration
  • Difficulty communicating
  • Disorganization
  • Poor attendance and follow-through
  • Poor hearing or vision
  • Lack of energy
  • Inappropriate comments, actions with others
  • Lack of awareness of limitations
  • Poor social skills
